This is why I have decided to research a little into card games and board games which have introduced this aspect into their games.
-Traditional Playing Cards -
A Card Game is a specific game which only uses a deck of playing cards. There are countless amounts of card games, these include all kinds of different types which may use a traditional deck of cards(Poker, Pontoon/21, Goldfish etc) or cards which are more game specific(Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Top Trumps etc).
Popular Types of Card Games -
- Matching Card Games - Rummy
- Comparing Card Games - Black Jack, Poker
- Patience Card Games - Solitaire
- Multi Genre Card Games - Pinochle, Belote
- Collectible Card Games - Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic: The Gathering
- Pokemon Trading Card Game -
- Magic Card Game -
However, some card games which have been put in to the card genre usually involve some form of gaming board. Whereas some card games use a board for score keeping or card placement, boardgames most of the time use cards as a a secondary component for the game.
A good example of a game which uses cards to give players an advantage or a disadvantage whilst moving around the board would be Monopoly. Monopoly works on a system where players move around the board by rolling two dice. However if a player lands on a Chance or a Community Chest space they pick up a card from whatever one they landed on. As I have said before, these cards can be good or bad for a player. Players may get a card sending them to jail or they may get a get out of jail free card depending on the players luck.
Monopoly consists of three different types of cards which are necessary to play the game. I have already talked about the Chance and Community cards, however another type of card that you use in Monopoly are the Property cards. These cards are used when a player purchases a property. Each of the property cards has different information which is specific to the space which the card belongs to(Rent, Purchase price, Hotel and House Prices etc).
The card aspect that I will be looking at adding can really take inspiration from games like Monopoly. The card aspect of the game will be used as a secondary component which will enhance the players gaming experience.
